Liverpool Hope University Space Society

There’s a new student Space Society now in our region!  On February 6th 2024 Liverpool Hope University Space Society (LHUSS) held their inaugural event.  The event, in the University campus, was attended by students, staff and invited guests.

Society member Elaine Taylor opened the meeting by welcoming all and introducing the speakers.  Aneesa Romana, President of the LHUSS then gave a welcome address, explained the make up of the society and their vision.    This was followed by presentations by Associate Professor Pavlos, Head of School Mathematics, Computer Science and Engineering and Professor Nagar, Pro Vice Chancellor for Research.  Dr Anicho, Senior Lecturer in Computer Science, who had been instrumental in the founding of the society gave a brief background and the Executive Members of the Society were introduced to the audience.

Alan Cross, North West Space Cluster Manager, then described his role and the Cluster purpose and events.

Following this Northern Space Consortium Chairman Bob Morris gave the keynote presentation.  He gave an overview of the current Space Industry especially in the UK and the wide range of different opportunities available now and in the near future that the students could be involved in.  He also described some of the activities and programmes set up specifically for students and the other student space societies in the region.  There are many opportunities in the UK Space industry and although the competition for new entrants can be strong the experience that students get by being active members of such societies really helps them in getting their first jobs.

Finally Aneesa Romana closed the meeting and thanked all present.

“I’m delighted to be here today and see the launch of a new Student Space Society in our region and to meet Aneesa, Elaine and the other students involved as well as Professor Nagar and see Professor Pavlos and Dr Anicho again.  We have worked with Dr Anicho since he joined the NSC to get this started and it’s great that there is a Space Society now in every University in Liverpool.  Not only do the students themselves benefit from participating in societies such as this but the University, region and industry does too” Bob Morris.
